Essay Two asks that you pick a word or phrase and then define (or redefine) it in one or a variety of ways that extend beyond a dictionary definition to reflect your unique perspective. Your goal is to explore a topic in a focused manor. You will make choices about which aspects of the definition to include, acknowledging the terms full complexity, while making clear your specific point of view. You may take to task a word or phrase that you perceive to have negative connotations and re-inscribe a positive meaning (i.e. ex-convict or feminist). You may take a concept that seems simple and problematize it, noting its multi-faceted nature (“just say no” or American dream). You may choose a word that you feel is often misused and offer your reading (hero or selfish). Whatever word or vbfphrase you choose, try to choose something that genuinely fascinates you and of which you are interested in exploring the nuances. Make sure to support your claims with various examples, concrete explanations, and plenty of details. Your essay should be between 700-800 words, typed, double-spaced pages, in MLA format. An appropriate title is required. Edit and proofread carefully.
