Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allen Stories
For this essay, you will compose a formal 6-8 page RESEARCH PAPER (Not including the works cited page) and include at least FOUR secondary sources. The paper will argue a point of analysis on two works of short stories. (WORKS WE READ WERE: Nathaniel Hawthornes “Young Goodman Brown”, Edgar Allen Poes “A Tell-Tale Heart”, Flannery O’ Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper”, Ray Bradbury’s “A Sound of Thunder”, and Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s “Harrison Bergerson”. Focus on two works that you read this semester that have something in common. Your thesis will make a statement in relation to all the stories or poems. DO NOT have an individual thesis for each work. Remember that THIS IS NOT A REPORT. You will make an argument of analysis about the subject matter. There may be some comparing and contrasting in the paper, but THIS IS NOT A COMPARE/CONTRAST PAPER. You could discuss: Common themes in the works, How the authors life or events from his or her life are present in his or her works, How the works fit within a historical context, The appropriateness of the works genre or literary genre functioning within the works, Similar writing style, or The works in relation to a literary movement.
